Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to summarize various presentations at EBSCO’s Technology Day, held in Manchester (UK) on 21 March 2023. Key topics included library user analytics, linked data, open-source software and library partnerships.

Design/methodology/approach

This study reports from the viewpoint of an attendee of the event. This summarises the main issues raised by each presentation and draws out the key learning points for practical situations.

Findings

The event focused on some new EBSCO products, including Panorama and BiblioGraph, as well as the open-source FOLIO product. The presenters highlighted technical detail involved in the various tools and drew attention to key issues to consider during product implementations.

Originality/value

This event highlighted key changes in metadata standards, with a shift from MARC to BIBFRAME now a tangible possibility. It highlighted how new library products in the future will be focused on adding value to how a library operates and makes decisions. The event underlined the importance of partnerships between the various actors in the library world, including suppliers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to summarise a number of presentations at Day 1 of the Internet Librarian International conference, London, UK (16 October 2018). This was the 20th conference in the series, and the three key themes included were the next-gen library and librarian; understanding users, usage and user experience; and inclusion and inspiration: libraries making a difference.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reports from the viewpoint of a first-time attendee of the conference. This summarises the main issues raised by each presentation and draws out the key learning points for practical situations.

Findings

The conference covered a variety of practical ways in which libraries can use technology to support users and make decisions about services. These include developing interactive physical spaces which include augmented reality; introducing “chat-bots” to support users; using new techniques to analyse data; and piloting new ways to engage users (such as coding clubs). A key theme was how we use and harness data in a way that is ethical, effective and relevant to library services.

Originality/value

This conference focussed on practical examples of how library and information services across sectors and countries are innovating in a period of huge change. The conference gave delegates numerous useful ideas and examples of best practice and demonstrated the strength of the profession in adapting to new technologies and developments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to summarize five presentations at the SharePoint Evolution Conference, held in Manchester, UK (16 June 2014). This was day 6 of a 12-day road-show across UK cities, and the four key themes included were technical, end user, business and product integration.

Design/methodology/approach

This article reports from the viewpoint of a first-time attendee of the conference. This summarizes the main issues raised by each presentation, and draws out the key learning points for practical situations.

Findings

The conference covered major SharePoint issues, like how to build a knowledge-sharing culture, how to manage a major IT project and the new functionality offered by SharePoint 2013. The sessions included demonstrations of new functionality, discussions of intangible aspects like culture and reflections on IT upgrades and projects.

Originality/value

This conference emphasized the importance of involving businesses in key decisions regarding SharePoint implementation and change. While SharePoint 2013 offers many new technical opportunities for librarians and information professionals, business involvement is critical to ensuring the success of knowledge-sharing cultures.

Abstract

This study examines the role of mentorship in black Greek letter fraternities (BGLFs) in resisting cultural and institutional oppression. Based on 20 interviews with black male college students, we build upon the works of others that have sought to examine the functions BGLFs play among black men in college. We suggest that BGLF participation offers collegiate black men mentorships with older members who motivate them to succeed personally and academically, support in integrating them into the black student community, and helps develop their professionalism and leadership. This mentorship allows young black men to contest the negative controlling images of black men culturally, and the lack of institutional support at predominantly white colleges and universities.

Abstract

Corporate downsizing has destroyed millions of well‐paying jobs just in the USA. The psychological, medical, and social costs are staggering. Families are fragmented, communities impoverished, democracies weakened by oligopolistic, plutocratic corporarchies, and Third World nations recolonized and their subsistence economies decimated. Most of the employee survivors of this economic and class warfare are working longer and harder and are suffering various stress, burnout, and psychiatric symptoms. In addition to intense global competition, cheap foreign labour, and superefficient technologies, there are psychocultural factors contributing to the “jobless economy”: executive ambition, greed, power‐lust, and winner‐take‐all ideologies. Solutions include changes in tax and other federal policies, restrictive corporate charters, shorter workweeks, community development programmes, and co‐operative, employee‐owned enterprises. The learning organization and fourth‐wave business suggest an evolutionary paradigm for the twenty‐first century based on global responsibility, economic justice, a new bottom line, and a restoration of meaningful, sustainable work.

Abstract

AN INTERESTING CHOICE for re‐issue this autumn in Anthony Blond's Doughty Library of novels by Victorian and Edwardian authors is Leonard Merrick's The Position of Peggy Harper: interesting because Peggy Harper has always been deservedly a favourite of Leonard Merrick's admirers, and these have been many and various; interesting because this novel is highly typical of Merrick's fiction in the realistic vein; and interesting, too, because any revival of enthusiasm for Merrick, a writer who has never quite had his due, should remind us of the great debt that Leonard Merrick owed to another man who, when he died in 1942, had been for a year borough librarian at Stratford on Avon, and whose name might be remembered today in several connexions more often than it is. The librarian was Alfred Wareing and it was he who was responsible for the publication between 1918 and 1921 of a uniform edition of Merrick's works.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the potential of photo-elicitation as a data generating method. Photo-elicitation is rarely used for data generation, despite the considerable promise of this method. Our empirical investigation focused on people's emotions and experiences of dual systems in Kazakhstan, a country currently undergoing change from the old Soviet system to a new market economy. In addition to semistructured interviews, we use photographs in order to enhance emotional connection and recall. We use the imagery as a device to generate data, and more specifically, data on individual and social perspectives that are integral to particular experiences. We argue that photo-elicitation can bring out peoples' lived experiences of the social context being investigated. We explain why and how to use the method in practice.

Abstract

Briefly reviews previous literature by the author before presenting an original 12 step system integration protocol designed to ensure the success of companies or countries in their efforts to develop and market new products. Looks at the issues from different strategic levels such as corporate, international, military and economic. Presents 31 case studies, including the success of Japan in microchips to the failure of Xerox to sell its invention of the Alto personal computer 3 years before Apple: from the success in DNA and Superconductor research to the success of Sunbeam in inventing and marketing food processors: and from the daring invention and production of atomic energy for survival to the successes of sewing machine inventor Howe in co‐operating on patents to compete in markets. Includes 306 questions and answers in order to qualify concepts introduced.
